Titanic tourist submersible goes missing with search under way

A submersible craft used to take people to see the wreck of the Titanic has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean with its crew on board, sparking a major search and rescue operation.

Tour firm OceanGate, which runs $250,000-a-seat expeditions to the wreck, said it was exploring all options to get the crew back safely.

It said government agencies and deep sea firms were helping the operation.

The Titanic sank in 1912 and lies some 3,800m (12,500ft) beneath the waves.

The missing craft is believed to be OceanGate's Titan submersible, a truck-sized sub that holds five people and usually dives with a four-day supply of oxygen.

It is not known when contact with the craft was lost.

If you really want to ride on a sub, I suggest you join the Navy, and ride one of these things.

Not only do you get PAID to ride that thing, but ever since the SUBSAFE program has been implemented, there haven't been any sinkings. Not only a safe design and maintenance routines, but the entire crew is trained to save the boat in the event something bad happens.

Can't say that about any civilian boat.

Inside, the 22-foot-long submersible is about the size of a minivan, Pogue reported, and has a single porthole at one end through which passengers can view the wreckage.

The Titan is operated from the inside by a single round button that turns from red to green when pushed: “It should be like an elevator,” CEO Stockton Rush told Pogue in 2022, adding: “It shouldn’t take a lot of skill.”

Later in the video, Rush points to some piping inside the vessel saying he purchased it from RV supplier Camping World, and says “we run the whole thing” using a video game controller—Pogue also shows the vessel uses construction pipes as ballast.
