At least 14 students and a teacher were killed in a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott said on Tuesday.

Abbott said the 18-year-old shooter was also killed.

The 18-year-old gunman who carried out the massacre with an AR-15 rifle entered the school at 11:28 a.m., opening fire in two adjoining classrooms where teachers and students were.

But it wasn't until about 78 minutes later when a US Border Patrol tactical team finally opened a locked classroom door using a key, stormed inside, and shot and killed the gunman, authorities have said.

Shooter barricaded himself in classroom, killing 19 children and 2 teachers, official says

All fatalities and injuries took place inside one classroom at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, according to Lt. Chris Olivarez, spokesperson for the Texas Department for Public Safety.

The shooter barricaded himself in one room, killing two teachers and 19 children, he said.

"Just goes to show you the complete evil from this shooter," Olivarez told CNN's John Berman and Shimon Prokupecz.

As the shooting was taking place, officers were going around the school, breaking windows and trying to evacuate children and staff. They were then able to force entry into the classroom where the shooter was, he said.

These are the people who are supposed to defend our communities? For 40 minutes these cowards stood outside the room where the massacre was occurring. Police instead went to save their own children while 19 others were being brutally murdered. During their final moments they were bleeding to death wondering why someone hadn’t saved them already. The cops refused to come save them but instead barred mothers, fathers and other family members from entering to save their children while letting their own take theirs home.

"I told one of the officers myself, if they didn't want to go in there, let me borrow his gun and a vest and I'll go in there myself to handle it. And they told me no," Victor Luna told CNN.

Javier Cazares, whose fourth grade daughter, Jacklyn Cazares, was killed in the attack, said he raced to the school when he heard about the shooting, arriving while police were still gathered outside the building.

Upset that police were not moving in, he raised the idea of charging into the school with several other bystanders.

“Let’s just rush in because the cops aren’t doing anything like they are supposed to,” he said.

“The bottom line is law enforcement was there,” McCraw said. “They did engage immediately. They did contain (Ramos) in the classroom.”

He “barricaded himself by locking the door and just started shooting children and teachers that were inside that classroom,” Lt. Christopher Olivarez of the Department of Public Safety told CNN.

A law enforcement official familiar with the investigation said the Border Patrol agents had trouble breaching the classroom door and had to get a staff member to open the room with a key.

What a phenomenally spectacular display of incompetence.

Yet Republicans have the fucking gall to suggest that armed guards at schools will solve school shootings, when they were completely ineffectual here and in Parkland. Fucking cowards, all of them.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw, the gunman was in the school between 40 to 60 minutes before law enforcement forcibly entered and killed him.

Video posted to social media appears to show frustrated and distraught parents and other adults outside the school clashing with law enforcement officers, urging the officers to go inside and get the gunman or let them go inside themselves.

“There were five or six of [us] fathers, hearing the gunshots, and [police officers] were telling us to move back,” Cazares told the newspaper. “We didn’t care about us. We wanted to storm the building. We were saying, ‘Let’s go’ because that is how worried we were, and we wanted to get our babies out.”
