Game Story
Year of the RatBat is a science fiction story by Royal and Pigeon inspired by the 2019-nCov outbreak. The story, set in late 2019, revolves around the philosophical problem of choice and immerses the player into the inevitability of karma and fate. The stories of the missions include underlying tones of societal struggle and dominance between working and ruling class factions. Four main archetypal characters —the clever Virologist/RNA engineer, the ever-evolving bat, the powerfully enigmatic Doctor, and the "god-like" citizen and community leader — starting in the center of modern China in the Hubei Province. Other smaller missions serve to provide a 360 degree view of events occurring during a pandemic crisis. Year of the RatBat provides multi-player action in many missions to give the player a quality learning experience in the importance of teams and trust in surviving a pandemic.
Year of the RatBat introduces missions with high quality cinematics integral to the various storylines of the game. Most of the original development team for Year of the RatBat returned to work on the game's expansion pack, Full Moon Zoo Skull; that game's development began only shortly after Year of the Brat was released. It's planned in late 2020, Year of the RatBat: Sneks Too begin development under WTFBioSoftware. Unlike the previous real-time strategy games in the series, Sneks Too was to be a stealth-action game. Work on the game was postponed in 2022. Development of a true YOTB sequel, Year of the Snek: Scales of Liberty, begin in 2024.
Story 1
Location: Wuhan Institute of Virology
Character: Scientist
Missions: 1) Finding office to obtain orders 2) Suiting up 3) Taking samples of various animals 4) Video review
Game Skills Learned by the Player: Navigation, object interaction, room access, health restoration choices, health protection choices
Real-World Knowledge Learned by Player: Price of cab in China, access protocols, lab protocols, coffee options, virus strains, animal testing, DNA/RNA sequencing, decontamination
Intro Video:
Driving to the lab in Wuhan, scenes of a normal bustling China city, turn near market- driver claims "can get anything you want at that market"
*slight music change scene, visually fades out to next scene in video
Conversation w/ driver continues until another passenger talks. It's the person briefing you on the protocols of the lab.
*lab shows up about 300 yards away, drives up to a gate, enters and parks.

Game Skills Learned by the Player: Various anti-viral drugs for health, gear used to protect against infection, how to assign non-player characters (NPC) tasksm multi-player modes with friends as doctors or nurses, staying away from bio-hazard material
Real-World Knowledge Learned by Player: influenza symptoms, task handling, task switching, prioritizing, inpatient data analysis, sterilization, CT scan analysis, bio-hazard handling

Missions: 1) Bite a scientist 2) Communicate with bats on escape 3) Use echolocation to find vulnerable wall 4) Communicate with other lab animals on take over.
Game Skills Learned by the Player: Alternate view (echo location), flying, logic maze, task switching for coordinating escape
Real-World Knowledge Learned by Player: Origin of COVID?, Unsafe laboratory practices, restricted lab architecture, bat diet, bat communication
Intro Video:
Satellite zooms in on Wuhan lab, from country view, to city view,then to rooftop, enters the cieling into the top floors of the building, then proceeds to the lower floors . Scientists and admin staff are seeing work at each floor.
Voices start to be heard.
Person 1: "I think the bat is asleep, proceeding to obtain sample".... "ow"
Person 2: "Yes?"
Person 3: "He didn't say Chow, he said 'Ow""
