Search for alien life put on hold...

Post by Pam » Tue Apr 26, 2011 1:28 am

A collection of sophisticated radio telescopes in California that scan the heavens for extraterrestrial signals has suspended operations because of lack of funding, a spokeswoman said Monday.

The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute operates the Allen Telescope Array, the field of dish-like scopes some 300 miles north of San Francisco. The telescopes are a joint effort of SETI and University of California-Berkeley's Radio Astronomy Lab and have been funded largely by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who donated more than $25 million to the project.

"The organization says it needs to raise $5 million".... WOW, does it really truly cost that much to maintain and operate those satellite dishes? Or is that the salaries.... I am in the wrong business :(

I saw this info earlier. Given of the number of billionaires, it is a shame the system never got finished. Why build scopes when money can be used to wage wars in the name of something. If the things spit out french fries or bullets, it would be a done deal.

SETI is a waste of time in my opinion. The money and the science should be expended on studying the thousands upon thousands of witness accounts, sightings, traces and other evidence that has been aggregated by competent researchers and observers over the last 2000 years- with particular emphasis on the last 70. SETI is not a serious approach.

Advanced civilizations may well communicate in some forum other than what we are expecting.

Yes. And they are doing it here and now.
