Elephant in the Room- Ms. Sandy

Post by Royal » Sun Oct 28, 2012 5:47 pm

Didn't want to post because all the hype of the past. But the preparations for the event become an event in itself.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will close the nation's largest transit system ahead of Hurricane Sandy, shutting down subway, commuter rail and bus service Sunday evening as the storm advances toward the New York City region.

The MTA will begin shutting down at 7 p.m. Sunday, with no transit service expected at least through the early hours of Tuesday, when the effects of the storm should be felt throughout New York City.

Currently looking for data on why this hurricane will not flop like the others...

Early Saturday morning, the National Weather Service downgraded the storm from a hurricane to a tropical storm — only to return it to hurricane status a few hours later. Either way, forecasters warn, "widespread impacts" are expected along the coast.

Three days before reaching land — a time when the National Hurricane Center usually puts a bull's-eye on a small stretch of coast — government forecasters were still talking about the possibility of the storm striking anywhere from Maryland to New York.

Their uncertainty was especially surprising because hurricane track forecasts have become so good in the past couple of decades. They are usually accurate five or more days out.

Yet during a press conference on Friday, James Franklin of the NHC was still deflecting reporters' questions about Sandy's track. "We cannot be precise at this stage about exactly where it will come in," he said.

Forecasters say Sandy just isn't like other hurricanes.

"The whole thing is unprecedented," Henry Margusity of AccuWeather told NPR's Melissa Block. "We've never seen anything like this."

....

Tropical storms in the Atlantic usually make a right turn and head out to sea as they travel north up the coast. But Sandy is expected to turn left and head straight inland.

That's because the storm is expected to encounter a highly unusual weather pattern. This pattern "blocks the system from going north and east and forces it to go more westward," said Louis Uccellini of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Another odd thing about Sandy is that it is expected to get slightly stronger as it moves north. Usually, hurricanes weaken as they reach cooler waters.

The reason for this strengthening is that Sandy is about to undergo a strange metamorphosis, forecasters say. Shortly before it reaches land, it will begin to encounter cold air from the north, and this cold air will change Sandy to something more like a winter storm.

Weather Underground director Jeff Masters said Sandy could turn out “as big, perhaps bigger, than the worst East Coast storm on record, a 1938 New England hurricane that is sometimes known as the Long Island Express, which killed nearly 800 people,” Reuters reported. “The late-season cyclone is widely expected to undergo an unusual merger with a polar air mass over the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Tuesday, essentially bringing two sources of energy together and giving Sandy the potential to punch above its weight as it sloshes across the U.S. coast.”

USA Today stated that the mixture would create “a megastorm that is expected to park over the northeast for days.”
Extraordinary claims.

That all makes sense, weatherwise. Of course they have to not down play it because then they get blame when fools get hurt.

The size and impact of Sandy can still grow even larger as it interacts with the US east coast. It will like a Nor’Easter on steroids with hurricane like energy… and a tack inland like no other.

storm surge...the combination of an extremely dangerous storm surge
and the tide will cause normally dry areas near the coast to be
flooded by rising waters. the water could reach the following
depths above ground if the peak surge occurs at the time of high
tide...

nc north of surf city including pamlico/albemarle sounds...4 to 6 ft
se va and delmarva including lower chesapeake bay...2 to 4 ft
upper and middle chesapeake bay...1 to 3 ft
long island sound...raritan bay...and new york harbor...6 to 11 ft
elsewhere from ocean city md to the ct/ri border...4 to 8 ft
ct/ri border to the south shore of cape cod including buzzards
bay and narragansett bay...3 to 6 ft

surge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge
and the tidal cycle...and can vary greatly over short distances.
given the large wind field associated with sandy...elevated water
levels could span multiple tide cycles resulting in repeated and
extended periods of coastal and bayside flooding. in addition...
elevated waters could occur far removed from the center of sandy.
furthermore...these conditions will occur regardless of whether
sandy is a tropical or post-tropical cyclone. for information
specific to your area...please see products issued by your local
national weather service office.

rainfall...rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected over far
northeastern north carolina with isolated maximum totals of 8
inches possible. rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are expected
over portions of the mid atlantic states...including the delmarva
peninsula...with isolated maximum amounts of 12 inches possible.
rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches with isolated maximum amounts
of 5 inches are possible from the southern tier of new york state
northeastward through new england.

Guess time will tell. Hopefully it is over hyped.

When there's ice.

I just thought of a new drone.

One that can tunnel through snow.

I hope they put some drones up into that storm. We can use a few less that still fly.
