I skimmed the article but got into chat about this today. I heard that Feynman proved how fast the o-rings became hazardous in a video. Also heard about the unimpressive mind of an ex Nasa employee... Something is not right at that place. Maybe corporations grab talent faster than the gov, so maybe that's the problem. (Or that's what I hope).

I think the recovery situation was to save face. It still was probably reasonable to have an emergency system that would have saved the crew.
