The UK is stuggling right now with alcoholic levels. They're downgrading the safe amount/day for men and women.
The healthcare costs/effects of too much booze over a long period of time is probably fueling this.

The US experimented with this in the early twentieth century with disastrous results.

Ah, the prohibition. Yup. Too far too fast. That's why they won't ban tobacco but instead have embarked for the last thirty years on health prevention/education. Takes longer but is more effective in lowering consumption.
