This was enlightening.

Ultimately the rejected wood might be useful as a habitat for a few limpets and barnacles and weeds, before disintegrating and providing nutrients to a few fish, before being defecated and ending up as base elements that start something again.

I'm sure a new healthy recipe will have the joint busting at the seams:
